Smart Targets

Make your aims smarter! No matter how ambitious and determined you are with your goals, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment if you are not strategic...

Smart Targets

Do you find yourself setting grandiose and elaborate future plans, but struggle to execute them? If the answer is yes, the good news is that you are not alone. No matter how ambitious and determined you are with your goals, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment if you are not strategic.

The utilisation of SMART targets should help you both personally and professionally- if you are willing to hold yourself accountable and be reflective on your performance. This handy and memorable acronym covers the following targets, Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Bound.

Our aims should be specific, sensible, and significant for us. Set numerical targets and fixed deadlines to motivate you. Include plenty of detail and narrow down what exactly you want to accomplish, this allows you to effectively plan your approach.

Progress should be able to be objectively measured. What evidence can you collect to track your performance? Reflect and re-evaluate if necessary.

Your targets need to be realistic and attainable but should challenge you appropriately to achieve the desired growth.

Your goal should be relevant to your needs and long-term plans. Ensure your targets are results-oriented and that you have sufficient resources to support your development.

Lastly you should set a fixed deadline to evaluate whether you have accomplished what you set out to. It may be daunting but sticking to an end-date not only improves our focus but provides something tangible to work towards.

Using this strategy should reap rewards by encouraging consistency, dedication and celebrating your victories. If at first you fail, try, and try again! Please remember to be kind to yourself as great things take time. Setbacks and missed opportunities are merely learning curves and future areas for development. Self-comparison against others is not only the thief of joy but can hold you back from reaching your true potential. Success is not about the absence of hurdles, but rather how you approach and overcome the hurdles you face!
